The Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. (CFBCI) donated relief goods to support workers responding to the Navotas City Landfill fire.

Mayor John Rey Tiangco and CFBCI officials attended the turnover ceremony for relief donations at Navotas City Hall on Tuesday, May 5.

Among those present were CFBCI officers led by Gerald Uy Chan, Director Gregorio Lagamayo, Director Fausto Tiu, committee vice chairpersons, and plenary members.

Prior to the turnover, CFBCI officers met with Tiangco, who provided updates on the fire situation at the 44-hectare landfill, which has been burning since April 10.

Tiangco said around 300,000 tons of soil are needed to extinguish the fire through landfill fire suppression and slope stabilization measures recommended by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which previously conducted a field demonstration at the site.

The city government, in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and Office of Civil Defense (OCD), has continued efforts to control the blaze.

Guided by JICA’s recommendations, the city implemented soil covering and compaction operations to prevent the fire from spreading further.

The local government also constructed a concrete access road connecting the landfill island to the mainland to speed up response operations.

CFBCI said landfill workers who have been rendering continuous service for nearly a month were identified as beneficiaries of the group’s Operation Brotherhood initiative.

A total of 170 relief packs containing rice, biscuits, soap, alcohol, face masks, and instant noodles were turned over to the local government.

CFBCI said the initiative aims to support frontline workers while reinforcing efforts to protect the welfare of residents affected by the incident.

The organization added that it remains committed to extending assistance during emergencies and supporting programs that promote public safety and community resilience.
