As the Tour of Luzon fever spreads like wildfire in this already sweltering summer, a one-legged rider caught the attention of cycling fans with his unwavering determination that matches the grit of other athletes.
Earlier this year, Grygo Angelito Bolinas bannered the Philippine para cycling team and won bronze medal in the men’s 3000m Individual Pursuit (CI-C3) event of the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
Bolinas, 34, was one of the members of 211-strong Filipino para athletes who participated in the regional showpiece where the country achieved its most fruitful campaign in meet’s history with 45 gold, 37 silver, and 52 bronze for a fourth-place finish.
On Thai soil, Bolinas joined fellow para cyclists Michael Bayani, Joel Ian Tacutaco, Godfrey Taberna, Janine Dauba, Patrick Gerard Lee, Sittie Alleaza Abubacar, and Arthus Bucay with the guidance of two-time Olympian Norberto Oconer.
His hard word proved to be contagious as support from his fellow cyclists flooded as well as the fans who watched him in social media pages.
The Santa Barbara, Pangasinan native, alongside his fellow para athletes led by Paralympians Angel Otom, Cendy Asusano, and Jerrold Mangliwan, recently received their financial bonus in an awarding ceremony staged at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila last week.
It was a timely boost for their training and personal expenses for their future competitions.
