How long does it take to build a short bridge?
In Albay, it started 15 years ago in Daraga town… and is still under construction.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon could not help but express his anger and disappointment after visiting the Kilicao-Binitayan Bridge—which could be a good contender for a Guinness World Record under longest time a bridge is constructed category.
“Fifteen years na ganito ito? (It’s been like this for 15 years?) Can you imagine, 15 years that the people here are suffering from this,” Dizon blurted out when he visited the site on Monday, May 4.
“This is one of the reasons why people are mad at their government,” he stressed.
He also lashed out at local DPWH officials for not bringing up the issue during his visit in February when he inspected another “architectural wonder” also in Daraga town, the unfinished Malabog Flyover.
It was Albay Gov. Noel Rosal who invited Dizon to visit the Kilicao-Binitayan Bridge.
During the visit, Dizon committed to download the necessary fund that will finally complete the construction project.
“This is critical, we have to finish this,” said Dizon.
He then instructed the district engineer to start the process of completion, starting with the checking of structural integrity of the bridge.
Dizon said his order is in line with the instruction of President Marcos to complete all the stalled projects in the soonest possible time.
In the case of the Kilicao-Binitayan Bridge, he committed to complete the project within two to three months.
