Practical ways to resist foreign united front influence

BARRACKS AND STRATEGY
If influence is the weapon of today’s conflicts, awareness becomes the shield. The United Front (UF) of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) does not fight wars but repeats its propaganda until it becomes an undeniable truth. Fighting this false truth requires awareness and discernment applied calmly, lawfully, and patriotically. In my last month’s article about the CPP UF works, I said that I would explain how an ordinary Filipino could detect influence strategies in their daily lives and support resilience through active participation. In this article, I will fulfill that promise.
Firstly, be wary of those stories that always paint China in the best light. United Front tactics repeat the same rhetoric: the Philippines is too weak to challenge China’s claim, the West Philippine Sea (WPS) is a lost cause, the United States (US) is just using us as pawns, or China is a peaceful country while Filipinos stir up trouble. As published in investigative journalism, these were pushed online by social media posts, while our boats faced harassment at sea. If all possible solutions mean surrendering or staying silent, that's not straight talk. It's pure influence.
Secondly, always ask who wins from the message. Who gains if Filipinos drop their sea rights claims? Who profits if support for democratic allies fades? Who benefits from convincing us that resistance is hopeless? Stories that always align with China’s interests are an attempt to manipulate you.
Thirdly, be wary of everyday Filipinos posting the same messages verbatim. In 2025, the Reuters and Rappler investigations revealed that a certain firm was paid by the Chinese embassy to run coordinated online campaigns using fake social media accounts posing as teachers, drivers, workers, or students spouting near-identical talking points. Real Filipinos don't copy-paste; they argue passionately.
Fourth, distinguish cultural pride from political loyalty. The Chinese-Filipino people naturally have a cultural affinity towards their ancestral land, just as Filipino Americans often feel affinity for the Philippines. However, problems arise when cultural or friendship organizations become political lobbies representing the interests of a foreign government. Patriotism means loyalty to the Philippines, not to any other country.
Next, keep an eye out for peace language being weaponized. United Front language tends to equate resistance with provocations and compliance with peace. Demands for dialogue are accompanied by water cannon violence, ramming incidents, and maritime harassments. Peacemaking is not appealing to Filipinos to stop provocations against China while ignoring illegal behavior. As pointed out by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), it is psychological warfare to erode national resolve without firing a shot. Peace without justice is surrender by another name.
Additionally, pay attention to patterns of access and rewards to individuals and organizations by Beijing, such as repeated trips, awards, and funding, linked to pro‑China narratives. The United Front strategy stresses the capture of elites by providing prestige and access to stir voices that promote foreign interests. Investigations into both online campaigns and organizational settings have documented these incidents.
Likewise, distance yourself from those who endlessly offer foreign narratives but ignore proven facts. Freedom of the press must be preserved. But audiences are also entitled to balance and accuracy from quality journalism by the very propaganda it purports to combat. Filipinos must also be vigilant of the people who continue to criticize trusted institutions. United Front narratives always go after people, exposing coercion and the institutions tasked to do so: the security and foreign affairs sectors of the government, investigative journalists, and fact‑checkers. They will paint these institutions as reckless, untruthful, or under foreign control to insulate Filipinos from trusted sources so propaganda can fill the vacuum.
Lastly, but most importantly, vote responsibly for leaders who do not parrot foreign propaganda that weakens our sovereignty, disregard legitimate decisions, and attack our national institutions. Voting for leaders of choice is one of the strongest and safest ways to defend our country peacefully.
However, our vigilance alone is not enough. The government must wield its legal power. Crucial is the passage of Congress of a Foreign and Malign Influence Law. As things stand today, the nation lacks a legal framework to counter both legal and gray-area foreign meddling. A law that emphasizes transparency, disclosure, and accountability will make foreign influence operations exposed, resisted, and assessed by the public. Also, stronger inter‑agency coordination, factual strategic communication, and good governance are all essential. Influence gains an easy entry where there is little trust.
Ultimately, the answer is clear. The Chinese Communist Party’s United Front does not win through coercion. It wins with doubt. Every Filipino who understands these tactics becomes harder to manipulate. Every citizen who pauses, questions, and chooses wisely strengthens democracy. Awareness is not fear; it is our national defense.
Against foreign influence and misinformation, defending the Filipino mind is the key.
