Noel Cabangon on OPM going global: It's about time
Known as one of the driving forces behind Original Pinoy Music, composer and singer Noel Cabangon couldn’t be prouder seeing the younger generation of Pinoy musicians take over the global stage, including BINI and SB19.
“I think it’s about time we introduce ourselves, especially young artists, on the international stage. Malaking tulong din yung maraming platforms and multicultural events—nakikilala yung talents natin, and of course, our music,” Noel said on the sidelines of the "Vibe" show.
He added, “I’m really proud of these young artists who were able to perform at Coachella and Lollapalooza.”
Noel, the voice behind enduring anthems like "Kanlungan," "Tuloy Pa Rin," and "Kaninong Anino," among many others, has long been synonymous with OPM’s soul, music that speaks not just of love, but of identity, struggle, and hope. His contributions helped shape a generation of Filipino songwriting rooted in meaning, paving the way for today’s artists to tell their own stories on a global scale.
On BINI being awarded the Global Force Award by Billboard, he said, “I think it’s a good recognition. Mahirap ma-recognize internationally, so these new platforms where Filipino musicians are being acknowledged—it’s also recognition of our music. It’s a welcome thing.”
Describing the new generation of OPM artists as modern-day “ambassadors,” the award-winning composer noted how “sila na talaga yung nagdadala ng Filipino music sa ibang bansa,” opening global audiences to OPM.
“Factor na rin yung bagong audience, they’re more open to different kinds of music, including ours,” he added.
With this momentum, Noel believes a Grammy Awards win for a Filipino artist is within reach. “Hindi malayo. I believe in our Filipino artistry and talents. Kayang-kaya natin yan,” he said.
Creating music for nation-building is his legacy
After decades in the industry, Noel reflects on the lasting impact of his work.
“I’m sure my songs will outlive me, kasi naka-print na siya. Sabi nga ng tatay ko, if you want to leave a legacy, magtanim ka ng puno… magkaroon ka ng anak… at gumawa ka ng bagay na maiiwang naka-print sa consciousness ng mga tao,” he shared.
Noel remains deeply conscious of music’s role in nation-building.
For Noel, songwriting goes beyond entertainment, it’s about connection and transformation.
“Kapag gumawa tayo ng kanta, lalo na kung relevant music yan, it has to go out of its confinement. Dapat ma-share yan sa buong Pilipinas at sa lahat ng generations.”
He hopes his music continues to enlighten and inspire.
“Yung mga kanta ko ay part of my effort to try and enlighten people, encourage them, and inspire them to do something for nation-building. Siguro ayun yung gusto kong maging memory sa akin.”
As proof of music’s enduring relevance, Noel pointed out how the themes in his songs remain timely amid issues like rising oil prices and governance concerns.
“Yung mga kanta namin dati relevant pa rin hanggang ngayon. Pabalik-balik lang talaga yung problema… corruption, world economy,” he said.
Noel remains committed to creating music that challenges and uplifts, continuing a legacy that has not only defined OPM, but also strengthened its voice in a rapidly changing world.
