The Marikina City government has approved an ordinance imposing a total ban on all types of trucks passing through the Barangka Bridge.
The measure, titled “An ordinance imposing a total truck ban on the use and passage of all trucks through the Barangka Bridge, providing penalties therefor, and for other purposes,” was authored by City Councilor Patrick John Sicat.
The bridge connects the Aurora Boulevard–Katipunan area to Marikina City and serves as a key access route near the Riverbanks area.
Under the ordinance, all classifications of trucks are covered, including light, medium, and heavy vehicles, as well as delivery trucks, dump trucks, mixer trucks, trailer trucks, and other cargo or hauling vehicles.
The restriction applies regardless of weight, load, or ownership, whether the vehicle is privately owned, company-owned, leased, or operated for hire.
Fire trucks are exempted from the ban.
Meanwhile, in a comment posted online, a netizen pointed out that a truck ban had long been in place along the route but claimed enforcement was not strictly implemented.
Responding to the comment, Sicat said the previous regulation only covered weight limits, which allowed some trucks to still use the flyover.
“Yes, may batas na po before about truck ban pero may gross weight limit po kaya may mga klase ng mga truck na nakagagamit ng flyover. This time po, across the board lahat na ng truck bawal po (Yes, there was already a law before on truck restrictions, but it only imposed a gross weight limit, which is why some types of trucks were still allowed to use the flyover. This time, the ban applies across the board—all trucks are now prohibited),” Sicat said
The local government said the measure aims to improve road safety and ease traffic congestion along the bridge.
