LEGAZPI CITY – Guinobatan Mayor Ann Gemma Ongjoco on Sunday thanked President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for the swift response of the national government following the heavy ashfall caused by Mayon Volcano that affected 44 barangays.
Ongjoco said the visit of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon, Office of Civil Defense Deputy Administrator Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, and other regional directors who assessed the situation on the ground assured them of aid from the national government.
“At least nakita nila at na-witness kung ano talaga ang sitwasyon sa Guinobatan. Makakarating ang first-hand information sa ating Presidente (At least they saw and witnessed what the situation in Guinobatan really was. First-hand information will reach our President),” Ongjoco said.
The mayor said repacking of food packs is ongoing, and more fire trucks from nearby areas, including Camarines Sur, are expected to augment clearing operations. More relief packs will come from Sorsogon, she added.
She said clearing ash deposits is urgent to avoid health risks, particularly respiratory concerns among children and vulnerable sectors.
Ongjoco raised concerns over the water supply, saying that the increased demand was due to continuous flushing operations.
She said the use of fire hydrants for clearing has strained water reserves, prompting the identification of alternative sources using submersible pumps.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development distributed food packs. The DPWH assisted in clearing operations to ensure the proper disposal of ash and prevent clogging of drainage systems, which could lead to flooding during rain.
Ongjoco thanked the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Philippine National Police for deploying fire trucks and personnel, as well as the neighboring local government units and provincial authorities for their support.
The local government distributed face masks and ensured the availability of potable water, while food assistance continues. Barangay health workers have been placed on standby at health centers.
Residents are urged to remain indoors, wear protective gear, and stay alert for further advisories.
Mayon Volcano will remain under Alert Level 3 (High Level of Volcanic Unrest), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
