TACLOBAN CITY – Gov. Ralph Vincent Evardone suspended work in all government offices in Eastern Samar following a magnitude-6.1 earthquake on Monday to ensure employees' safety and allow authorities to assess potential damage from the quake.
"Residents are advised to remain alert for aftershocks and follow safety advisories issued by local disaster response agencies," he said.
Several aftershocks were felt in the epicenter of the earthquake in the municipality of San Julian. Tremors were also felt in other provinces of Samar Island and Leyte.
The Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office will conduct an assessment of the earthquake damage.
Residents reported damaged furniture and people in downtown Tacloban City rushed outside the buildings during the quake.
Further assessments are ongoing, authorities said.
