Police forces in Albay and nearby areas were instructed to focus on road-clearing operations to ensure emergency vehicles and relief convoys maintain access to communities affected by Mayon Volcano’s ashfall.
As of now, Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the area of operation include the towns of Camalig, Guinobatan, and Ligao City where several barangays were blanketed by thick ash on Saturday.
The volcanic materials, according to Nartatez, threaten to stall humanitarian efforts following the pyroclastic density current recorded on May 2.
“Our personnel are already on the ground since Day 1 of the volcano activity and we are continuously supporting cleanup operations in coordination with local government units and other agencies,” said Nartatez.
Earlier, President Marcos directed all government agencies to prioritize clearing of roads and ashes to also ensure the health safety of the local residents.
Nartatez directed local police units in the Bicol region to maintain a visible presence on ash-slicked roads where visibility dropped to near-zero levels.
Officers used patrol lights and real-time advisories to guide motorists away from hazardous zones.
Aside from this, Nartatez confirmed that mobile units are now equipped with specialized search and rescue tools and high-powered lighting for night operations.
This equipment upgrade, he said, allows teams to operate effectively in hard-to-reach areas where ash accumulation has blocked traditional routes.
“We have mobilized sufficient personnel and resources to ensure that every affected barangay feels the police presence. Our response time reflects our commitment to 'zero casualty' and public safety," Nartatez said.
