To be loved for who you are

To be loved is one of the deepest human desires. But what if love is not directed at who you are, but at who others imagine you to be? What appears warm and affirming can later become painful. For, if what is loved is not your real self, then you remain unrecognized and unaccepted.
But many of us unwittingly invite this kind of love. We enjoy being admired and praised, so we try to fit into people’s idealized image of ourselves. We conceal our flaws and soften our rough edges. We become extra careful to meet their expectations so as not to shatter the illusion.
Beneath the surface, though, we begin to wonder: “If they truly knew me, would they still love me?” We dread the moment our imperfections are exposed, fearing what might follow. We become so skilled at playing a role that we start to believe they love us. In truth, they do not even know us.
To be loved for who we are requires the courage to be seen without disguise or pretense. It calls us to step out of the image we have so carefully constructed and allow others to encounter us as we are. Yes, this risks rejection. But any love built on illusion is destined to collapse. Only love rooted in truth can endure.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus must have been devastated when He realized that, after all the sufferings He had endured, many of His closest disciples still did not know Him. His words to Philip ached with sadness: “I have been with you for so long, and still you do not know me?” (John 14:8–9). Jesus must also have been disappointed when Mary Magdalene mistook Him for the gardener (John 20:11–18). She recognized Him only when He called her by name.
Also, when two disciples were on theit way to a village named Emmaus, they met the risen Jesus. Throughout their journey, they spoke with Him, listened to Him, and even felt their hearts burning within them,. Yet they did not recognize Him (Luke 24:13–35). Why? Because they were expecting a different kind of Messiah. They were looking for a political liberator, not a crucified Lord.
This was reminiscent of what happened when Jesus returned to Nazareth where He had grown up. Familiarity blinded His hometown folks. They asked, “Is this not the carpenter?” (Matthew 13:55). They did not allow Him to be who He truly was because they thought they knew Him too well. Eventually, they rejected Him.
If we are honest, we are no different. We often fail to recognize Jesus because we expect Him to appear in power and spectacle. We look for Him in the extraordinary and miss Him in the ordinary. We want Him to solve our problems, and so we overlook His quiet presence in our struggles. In many ways, we are like Philip, saying to Jesus, “Show us the Father” (John 14:8), not recognizing the Father who has already been revealed in Christ.
Recognizing Jesus does not begin with sight, but with faith. Faith is a deeper kind of seeing. We often think, “If only I could see, then I would believe.” But the Gospel reverses this. It is by believing that we begin to see. Faith opens our eyes to a presence that has always been there. This is what the risen Lord taught the apostle Thomas: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed” (John 20:29).
Without faith, Jesus remains a distant figure or an admirable teacher and guide. But with faith, we exclaim as the apostle Thomas did: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Jesus is the Lord who is alive in His Word, present in the Eucharist, and quietly at work in the ordinary moments of our lives.
Only when we dare to believe can we see Jesus for who He truly is and love Him as we should. Let us pray that others will also learn to embrace us in faith so we may experience the joy of being loved for who we are.
