The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, May 3, urged the public to follow protective measures against ashfall as volcanic activity from Mayon continues to pose health risks to nearby communities.
In an advisory, the agency underscored the need to wear proper protective gear, avoid high-risk areas, and limit exposure to volcanic ash, which may cause irritation and respiratory problems.
“Magsuot ng mask (N95 kung mayroon) o ng basang tela (Wear a mask (preferably N95 if available) or a damp cloth),” the DOH said.
“Nakakatulong ito na salain ang maliliit na particles na maaaring magdulot ng iritasyon sa ilong, lalamunan, at baga (This helps filter small particles that may cause irritation to the nose, throat, and lungs),” it added.
As such, the health department warned the public to avoid going near hazardous zones around the volcano.
“Iwasang lumapit sa Permanent Danger Zone ng bulkan. Mas mataas ang konsentrasyon ng nakalalasong usok malapit sa bulkan (Avoid going near the volcano’s Permanent Danger Zone. The concentration of harmful smoke is higher near the volcano,” the DOH said.
The agency likewise advised residents to keep their homes sealed to prevent ash from entering.
“Isara ang mga pinto at bintana. Gumamit ng basang tela para takpan ang mga siwang sa pinto o bintana (Close doors and windows. Use damp cloth to cover gaps in doors or windows,” it said.
To reduce discomfort caused by ash exposure, the DOH encouraged the public to stay hydrated.
“Nakababawas ito ng iritasyon sa lalamunan, bibig, at baga (This helps reduce irritation in the throat, mouth, and lungs),” it added.
The agency reminded the public to seek immediate assistance if needed, noting that emergency hotlines remain available, including the national emergency number 911.
