UST's Detdet Pepito (UAAP Media)
Not long ago, Detdet Pepito was motivated to give it another shot after University of Santo Tomas fell short in the UAAP Season 87 volleyball tournament.
The 23-year-old libero stayed true to her words and poured it all for the Golden Tigresses in her final playing year this Season 88.
Unfortunately, the España-based squad succumbed to reigning champion National University.
Now facing the inevitable question after exhausting all her playing years, will she pursue the big jump to the pro ranks or become the teacher she aspires to be?
The 5-foot-2 player was candid about her path, stressing that she is planning to make her big move this time which is to apply for the upcoming PVL Draft.
“Actually, hindi ko nga alam kung kanino nanggaling ‘yong hindi ako magpapa-draft, kasi nababasa ko ‘yon. Diko alam saan nanggaling ‘yon, wala naman akong sinabi,” Pepito said moments after UST’s 20-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-21 loss to NU at the jam-packed Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday, May 2.
“Pero siyempre do’n nako sa mas passion ko, ‘yong paglalaro ng volleyball,” she added as she followed it up with a quip of applying right away if the draft is open today.
A graduate of Bachelor of Elementary Education at UST last year, Pepito said she isn’t entirely closing her doors when another opportunity knocks.
“Pero if ever man… second option ko pa rin ‘yong sa education [degree] ko,” Pepito continued.
The younger sister of former collegiate volleyball stars MJ and Marge Pepito who starred for San Sebastian before, Detdet is full of gratitude to UST for giving her the chance to hone her skills.
She also sees a bright future for the Shaq Delos Santos and the Tigresses who will now be bannered by Season 86 Rookie of the Year Angge Poyos.
Regarding the leadership role? Pepito viewed Reg Jurado as her successor.
“Andami naming napagdaanan ng magkasama, and I think marami siyang natutunan sakin, hindi lang sakin pati kay ate Eya [Laure]. So nakikita ko, kayang kaya niyang dalhin ‘yong team,” said Pepito.
