Richard Luna, one of the most respected swimming coaches in the country, has passed away, the Philippine Aquatics Inc (PAI). announced on its social media post Friday, May 1. He was 61.
Also working as technical official, Luna was a revered mentor in the local swimming scene after he guided many aspirants, especially student-athletes.
He previously served as UAAP swimming event commissioner in Season 87 and 88 while guiding the Perpetual Altas tankers in the NCAA.
“We are truly grateful for the dedication, passion, and invaluable contributions he shared with the Philippine Aquatics community. His legacy will continue to inspire athletes, coaches, and everyone whose lives he has touched,” PAI wrote.
“In this time of grief, we humbly ask for your prayers for the eternal repose of his soul, and for strength and comfort for his family and loved ones,” it added. “He will always remain in our hearts.”
Many individuals and teams paid tribute and expressed their condolences through their respective social media posts, including Perpetual and the UAAP.
“The UAAP mourns the passing of Season 87 and 88 Swimming Commissioner, Coach Richard Luna. We extend our sincerest condolences to his bereaved family, friends, and colleagues,” the UAAP penned. “Rest in peace, Coach Richard.”
“His remarkable legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those he guided and in the many lives he touched through his unwavering commitment to excellence. Rest in peace, Coach Richard,” Perpetual wrote. “Your legacy will forever inspire future generations of swimmers and remain a lasting symbol of excellence in Philippine sports.”
