The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the country may see one to two tropical cyclones either forming or entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this May.
PAGASA weather specialist Leanne Loreto said the next tropical cyclones entering or forming within PAR will be given the local names “Caloy” and “Domeng.”
Loreto also cited climatological tracks for May, which show two common paths of tropical cyclone activity.
The first involves cyclones forming in the Western Pacific that may enter PAR but recurve before making landfall.
The second involves cyclones that enter PAR and make landfall over central Philippines before curving and eventually exiting the country’s PAR.
However, the country may remain tropical cyclone-free over the coming week.
Based on the PAGASA’s weather outlook from May 1 to 8, the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, will continue to be the dominant weather system in the country.
PAGASA said Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms from Friday, May 1, to Saturday, May 2.
The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with possible rain showers or thunderstorms.
From Sunday, May 3, to Monday, May 4, PAGASA said the the easterlies will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Palawan, Northern Mindanao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bohol, Siquijor, and Negros Oriental.
The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of localized rain showers or thunderstorms.
From Tuesday, May 5, to Thursday, May 7, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, mostly affecting the eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao.
On Friday, May 8, PAGASA said Davao Region, Surigao del Sur, South Cotabato, and Sarangani are expected to have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the easterlies.
The rest of the archipelago will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with possible localized rain showers or thunderstorms.
