PCO lauds NBI arrest of Jay Sonza over fake news on Marcos' health
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) welcomed the arrest of former broadcaster Jay Sonza, saying it reflects the government’s firm and lawful response against the spread of fake news.
In a statement, the PCO said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) acted promptly in filing charges and effecting Sonza’s arrest over posts alleging false information about President Marcos’ health.
PCO Acting Secretary Dave Gomez said the NBI’s actions show the administration’s commitment to protecting the public from misinformation.
“It shows the government’s continuing effort to guard the truth, protect the public from deception, and preserve a free but responsible democratic space,” Gomez said.
Gomez said the case sends a strong signal to those spreading false information online.
“Misinformation undermines public trust, endangers lives, and will be met with swift, lawful consequences,” he said.
“Public discourse must remain free, but it must also be truthful, fair, and orderly. Speak freely, but not falsely,” he added.
‘Oplan Kontra Fake News’
The PCO said the arrest forms part of its broader campaign against disinformation under “Oplan Kontra Fake News.”
Gomez said the office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies, media organizations, and online platforms to address the spread of false content.
“We will continue to work with law enforcement, the media, and responsible online platforms to identify, investigate, and prosecute those who disseminate falsehoods,” he said.
The PCO recently signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Justice and the Department of Information and Communications Technology to strengthen efforts against fake news.
The agreement formalizes coordination in investigating and prosecuting cases involving online disinformation.
The PCO said it has already submitted several cases to the Department of Justice for investigation by the NBI and possible prosecution in court.
The Palace reiterated that while freedom of expression is protected, those who deliberately spread false information will be held accountable under the law.
