Cop hurt in brief Labor Day clash in Manila

A brief clash broke out between police officers and a group of protesters along Kalaw Avenue near Roxas Boulevard in Manila on Thursday, May 1, during Labor Day demonstrations.

Authorities said the incident occurred while police were managing crowd movement, leading to a confrontation with one of the protesting groups.

A police officer was reportedly scratched during the commotion and was immediately given first aid at the scene.

The Manila Police District (MPD) said it continues to observe maximum tolerance in handling rallies, but stressed that it has clear limits when public safety, order, and security are already compromised.

Police said they are duty-bound to intervene and enforce the law when incidents escalate or unlawful acts occur.

Security forces quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation and restore order in the area.

Police maintained their presence to prevent further disturbances and ensure the safety of both demonstrators and motorists.

As of press time, the situation has been contained, with no further disturbances reported.
