Beach trips and outdoor plans this Labor Day may come with sweltering heat, as heat index levels in some areas are expected to reach “danger” levels, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday, April 30.
PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez said the easterlies, or warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean, will be the dominant weather system on Labor Day, May 1.
She said these winds will bring hot and humid conditions that may push heat index levels to dangerous levels in several areas.
Heat index values of 42°C to 43°C may be recorded in Dagupan City in Pangasinan; Subic Bay and Olongapo City in Zambales; Sangley Point in Cavite City; Laoag City in Ilocos Norte; Bacnotan in La Union; Aparri in Cagayan; Camiling in Tarlac; San Jose in Occidental Mindoro; Virac in Catanduanes; Masbate City in Masbate; Dumangas in Iloilo; La Granja in La Carlota City in Negros Occidental; Catarman in Northern Samar; and Guiuan in Eastern Samar.
PAGASA said heat index levels ranging from 42°C to 51°C pose a high risk of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and possible heat stroke.
The weather bureau advised the public to limit outdoor activities during peak hours, stay
hydrated by drinking water regularly, and take precautions such as wearing light-colored clothing, using sun protection, and taking breaks in shaded areas.
Although the weather will be hot, PAGASA said scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected over Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Davao Region, Palawan, Southern Leyte, and Basilan.
Meanwhile, partly cloudy to cloudy skies will prevail over Metro Manila and the rest of the country, with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms likely in the afternoon or evening.
Dominguez added that no tropical cyclone or low-pressure area is expected to develop over the weekend.
