Katipunan schools push for wealth tax

Schools along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City, together with the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines (SCAP), joined Akbayan Youth in intensifying calls to tax the wealthiest Filipinos and ease the burden on the middle class, who make up the majority of taxpayers.

The collective—composed of UP Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, Miriam College, and their respective student councils—displayed banners along Philcoa and Katipunan Avenue and on public utility vehicles with the message: “TAX THE RICH: FOR A PHILIPPINES THAT WE CAN AFFORD.” They also staged a creative protest action.

SCAP National Capital Region Vice Chairperson Sophia Sacaguing emphasized that taxing the wealthiest Filipinos is a long-term, structural solution that directly benefits education and public services.

“Ang pagbubuwis sa pinakamayayaman ay konkretong hakbang para pondohan ang edukasyon—ang mga LUC, SUC, at public schools na matagal nang binabarat—at para palakasin ang serbisyong panlipunan,” she said.

The youth also pushed for the passage of House Bill 4801, or the Interns’ Rights and Welfare Act, filed by Akbayan Partylist.

“Kasabay ng panawagan para sa pagtaas ng sahod at pagwakas ng endo para sa mga manggagawa, dapat ding igiit na ang mga student interns ay hindi ‘free labor.’ Karapatan naming mga student interns ang sapat na suporta, proteksyon, at makataong kondisyon sa trabaho—hindi pagsasamantala,” Sacaguing added.

SCAP noted that strengthening support systems in education must go hand in hand with broader economic reforms.
