Last April 12, I attended the “Hawak Mo Ang Bits” show of Atty. Edward Chico in Quezon City. The show consisted of five performers. First on stage was a neophyte lawyer, Jigs Primicias. He sported a Mohawk, which was already an indicator that he was willing to take risks, and his skit was funny, especially when he shared his experiences in court. Atty. Alex Erese came after, with witty humor which got the crowd going. There were two Pilipinas Got Talent finalists that came after, Alakim, who did amazing magic tricks with butterflies, and Ruther Urquia, who was really funny! Then came the headliner, Atty. Edward Chico.

Atty. Chico had a really good show. And as is usual with stand-up comedy, they share their life experiences, which may not have been funny at the time they occurred, and use them in the stories they tell, and I learned more about them during their skits. And that’s the true essence of making people laugh, but at the same time, learn. I had learned how Ed struggled in his childhood, but through grit and determination, he overcame the challenges. He did it in such a way that you’d see through all the hardships, a determination, not a plea for pity, but a strong resolve to be better and do better, all while keeping his sense of humor. While sharing his stories, he was able to sneak in some doses of reality that, unfortunately, many do not see but need to hear.

His take on Philippine politics is among the wittiest I’ve heard. And it’s not the usual abrasive approach that leaves a bad taste in the mouth. His takes were direct hits on certain topics, but the way it was delivered, didn't you feel like he’s better than you. Nor does it alienate; rather, it reminds them of the frailties of their often carefully crafted realities, built inside an echo chamber. It was funny watching some laugh at themselves. Hopefully, after the show, they remember those things and become more politically aware.

I wish I had attended his show earlier, and I wish more people would have the opportunity to see how good he is, not just in delivering jokes and witty comments, but also in subtly (most of the time) nudging people to make them more aware of current events and politics.

Atty. Ed has steadily gained a following. Especially during the pandemic. He’s quite active on social media, and he’s been in the news recently, and I’m happy more people get to see his wit and humor. Craftily saying uncomfortable truths that need to be said. Many of the things he posts on social media are takes on topics that people need to be aware of.

He has several shows lined up in the coming months, starting with one in Cagayan de Oro City TODAY, April 30. If you read this and are in Misamis Oriental, you won’t regret watching his show. Later this year, he’ll be traveling to Australia.

One thing I hope happens in the future? He gets his own Netflix special. THAT would be awesome. Not just for him, but for us, who appreciate witty humor.
