The housing relocation project intended for informal settlers affected by the construction of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) extension officially broke ground on a large parcel of land in Barangay Calumpang, Calumpit, Bulacan, on Tuesday, April 28.
The Casa El Pueblo housing relocation project in Calumpit is being implemented in collaboration with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) under the El Nuevo De Calumpit Roadmap 2050 initiative.
The groundbreaking ceremony was personally supervised by DOTr Assistant Secretary IC Calaguas, together with Bulacan Vice Governor Alex C. Castro, Calumpit Mayor Lem Faustino, Vice Mayor Zar Candelaria, and other local officials.
The project will rise on a 3-hectare site and will consist of six mid-rise buildings, each with four floors, providing a total of 648 housing units for families affected by the NSCR project from Calumpit and Malolos in Bulacan, as well as Apalit and Minalin in Pampanga.
The community is designed with complete infrastructure, including an 850-meter access road directly connected to MacArthur Highway, a well-maintained road network for safe mobility, and a drainage system to address flooding.
Additional facilities include a sewage treatment plant to ensure a clean environment and a solid waste management system for proper disposal.
Each housing unit will be functional and comfortable, with adequate ventilation and natural light, individual water and electricity connections, and dedicated spaces for open areas, playgrounds, and community facilities to strengthen social ties among residents.
Calaguas emphasized that the project is not merely housing but a planned, inclusive, and long-term community that reflects the vision of El Nuevo De Calumpit—a town that is orderly, safe, and dignified for all.
Meanwhile, Vice Governor Castro praised the DOTr for the initiative and assured that the provincial government, under Governor Daniel R. Fernando, fully supports significant national projects.
He described the development as a “wonderful blessing” for residents, fulfilling their dream of owning modern homes through the efforts of Mayor Faustino and Vice Mayor Candelaria.
In his congratulatory remarks, Castro lauded the resilience of Calumpit residents, who continue to unite and rise despite challenges such as flooding, which has long hindered progress in the town.
