President Marcos has sought clarification from French and Czech officials over the release of former congressman Zaldy Co, expressing disappointment that the fugitive remains at large in Europe despite efforts to secure his return to the Philippines.
The President raised the matter during separate meetings with the French Ambassador Marie Fontanel and the Czech Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Eva Tenzin on Wednesday, April 29, according to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).
“He expressed disappointment at the whole situation with Zaldy Co and that despite the Philippines’ earnest efforts, Zaldy Co remains at large in Europe,” the PCO said.
“He requested further information as to what transpired and why Zaldy Co was released from custody by the Czech authorities,” it added.
Authorities earlier identified Co, one of the prominent figures in the flood control scandal last year, as a fugitive with a standing case and a cancelled passport.
Malacañang has maintained that fugitives must be returned to the Philippines to answer for the charges against them.
Push for justice
The President reiterated that Co must be brought back to the country “once and for all” to face justice.
He stressed the importance of continued coordination with foreign governments in pursuing individuals facing legal cases in the Philippines.
The Palace has consistently said that accountability must be enforced regardless of status.
Bilateral ties ‘remain strong’
Despite the issue, President Marcos expressed confidence in the Philippines’ relations with France and the Czech Republic.
He said these ties are grounded in shared values, including respect for the rule of law.
The Palace noted that cooperation with both countries remains vital in addressing cross-border legal concerns.
“Moving forward, he remains hopeful of future police, legal, and judicial cooperation, so that once and for all, Zaldy Co is brought back to PH to face justice,” the PCO said.
