ILOILO CITY – The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that agribusiness ventures in Western Visayas and Negros Occidental were among the national winners in the Young Farmers Challenge (YFC).
The DA-Western Visayas led by Director Dennis Arpia produced four winners in the start-up categories with a cash price of P300,000 that can be used to improve their agribusiness ventures.
Western Visayas had two top winners in the start-up food processing category. Joy Saban of Lambunao town in Iloilo province placed third while Geneco Mabasa of Bugasong town in Antique province was fourth.
The enterprise Banana Kingdom Food Products of Saban, who has Indigenous People's blood, not only adds value to raw agricultural produce but also supports the Panay Bukidnon IP community.
Mabasa’s enterprise Sirit Kuriit, which produces traditional spiced nipa palm vinegar, revived heritage food processing methods while creating additional income streams for local nipa farmers.
Karlo and Lynne Rose Mindanao of Pontevedra town in Negros Occidental province were among the winners in the non-food processing category and also received the Young Regenerative Agriculture Award. The couple’s enterprise K & L EcoFeed produces usable feed inputs from agricultural and organic waste.
Erika Jane Hadlocon and Rian Kierre Golez of Guimaras province won first place in the start-up digital agriculture category. Their AgriBnV is an agri-tourism project in San Lorenzo town that links visitors wanting farm experiences with the aid of digital platforms.
Western Visayas produced a national winner in the upscale component. Anita’s Juice Corner owned by Ross Anthony Borda and Atty. Annyka Frances Beatriz dela Cruz-Borda was the fourth place winner. Their juice business helped local farmers reduce losses from wastage of fruits and vegetables.
Present during the recent awarding ceremony in Iloilo City was DA Assistant Secretary Genevieve Velicaria-Guevarra.
