If you were to ask Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic’’ Remulla, the Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) post should be totally abolished apparently due to alleged corruption-related controversies.
A long time supporter of the scrapping of the youth council, Remulla’s call was further strengthened with the recent involvement of two Makati City SK chiefs in the alleged dishonesty and misconduct transactions.
In the two incidents, Remulla said he finds it difficult to understand how two Sangguniang Kabataan leaders from the subdivisions of Barangay Dasmariñas Village and Barangay Magallanes were allegedly involved in the offenses, noting that they come from affluent families.
Remulla said that one SK chairman demanded a 20 percent cut or kickback from a catering service for a Halloween Party held in 2025, while the other forged the signature of an SK councilor to formulate a resolution on a halloween project.
The DILG chief expressed frustration that corruption had reached the SK level, even in the richest barangays, vowing not to single anyone out any guilty parties, whether from the small or wealthy barangays.
In the event of a Constitutional change, Remulla reiterated his call to dissolve the Youth Council as corruption seemed to be the culture from childhood under the current SK system.
