Pasay City authorities on Monday warned residents of hazardous air as thick smoke from the Navotas landfill fire drifted into parts of the city, urging the public to limit outdoor exposure or wear protective masks.
Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano said the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that polluted air could trigger breathing difficulties, eye irritation, coughing, throat discomfort, headaches, and dizziness.
She advised residents to remain indoors as much as possible, keep doors and windows closed, and wear protective masks—preferably N95 or equivalent—when going outside.
She also discouraged strenuous outdoor activities and urged the public to stay hydrated.
“Those experiencing severe symptoms, especially difficulty in breathing, should seek immediate medical attention,” the CDRRMO said in its advisory.
The CDRRMO added that it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with concerned agencies to mitigate the impact of the smoke and safeguard public health.
Heightened precautions were recommended for vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions.
The mayor urged residents to rely on verified updates from the city government and disaster response offices as efforts continue to address the situation.
