Remolona awaits official copy of Carpio's criminal complaint
BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) stated that its governor will respond to a legal complaint once he receives an official copy of the documents, as the country’s monetary authority seeks to maintain focus on its regulatory mandate.
In a statement on Monday, April 27, the central bank said BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. has yet to be served with the complaint and will file a response through the proper legal channels.
“The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) takes note of recent reports regarding the filing of a case against the BSP Governor,” the central bank said. “The Governor has yet to receive a copy of the complaint and will respond appropriately upon receipt, before the proper forum.”
The BSP’s statement follows the filing of criminal charges on Monday by lawyer Manases R. Carpio—husband of Vice President Sara Duterte—against Remolona in his capacity as chairman of the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC). The complaint also names the executive director of the AMLC and four members of the House of Representatives (HOR).
Despite the legal action, the central bank and the AMLC noted that they continue to perform their duties in accordance with the law, emphasizing that their operations remain guided by independence, professionalism, and due process.
“We emphasize that the BSP and the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) continue to perform their mandates in accordance with law, guided by independence, professionalism, and due process,” the statement read.
The AMLC, a key arm in the government’s effort to combat financial crime, operates alongside the BSP to monitor suspicious transactions and enforce compliance among financial institutions. (Derco Rosal)
