With the heat index forecast to hit a blistering 41°C, the Manila local government has rolled out citywide misting operations in public areas and renewed advisories urging residents to stay hydrated and limit sun exposure.
Speaking at the flag-raising ceremony on Monday, April 27, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso singled out frontliners from the Department of Public Services, Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau, Engineering Department, Estero and Pasig Rangers, and personnel stationed along Roxas Boulevard as among the most vulnerable to prolonged heat.
He also reminded Arnold Santiago, head of the Manila Police District, to ensure officers on the ground stay alert and protected amid the intense heat.
The warning comes as El Niño continues to bring dry, hot weather across the country.
State weather bureau DOST-PAGASA said the 41°C heat index falls under “Extreme Caution,” where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, and heat stroke is possible with long exposure outdoors.
Domagoso urged workers to keep drinking water, even if it means frequent bathroom breaks.
Still, the mayor offered hope, saying relief may be on the way.
“Ilang araw na lang… darating ang Agua de Mayo. Lalamig din ang panahon (Just a few more days… the May rains will arrive. The weather will cool down) .”
The city government directed continuous misting operations in key areas across Manila to help ease rising temperatures and provide relief to residents.
The local government also urged the people, especially outdoor workers and frontliners, to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and remain alert to symptoms of heat-related illness such as dizziness and fatigue.
