VM Chi Atienza joins PCG Auxiliary for Manila coast protection
Vice Mayor Chi Atienza takes her oath as Auxiliary Commodore of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, strengthening Manila’s partnership with maritime authorities to boost coastal security and disaster response.
Strengthening maritime security and disaster readiness, Chi Atienza has formally joined the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) as an Auxiliary Commodore, signaling closer coordination between the Manila city government and national maritime authorities.
The oath-taking underscores the ongoing push of Atienza and Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso to enhance protection over Manila’s coastal zones, ports, and vulnerable waterfront communities.
In her remarks, Atienza recalled her long-standing connection with Baseco, a coastal community she supported even before entering public office.
She said her firsthand experience there shaped her appreciation of the Coast Guard’s role in safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
“I have seen it with my own eyes. I went around and witnessed how active the Philippine Coast Guard is in helping the community I dearly love,” she said.
Atienza also acknowledged the influence of her parents, former Manila mayor Lito Atienza and Beng Atienza, who, she said, instilled in her the values of integrity and patriotism that now guide her leadership.
Officials explained that the rank of Auxiliary Commodore is conferred on select government leaders to strengthen links between local governments and the Coast Guard, particularly in areas such as emergency response, marine environmental protection, and maritime safety.
For Manila, a city whose economy is closely tied to its ports, the appointment is expected to translate into quicker disaster coordination and stronger protection of key commercial entry points.
“Importante po para sa amin ni Mayor Isko na maproteksyunan ang mga pier dito sa Maynila, dahil dito nag-uumpisa ang ating komersyo,” Atienza said.
She also assured Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan of the city’s full support, emphasizing the need to raise public awareness on maritime security.
“Rest assured that we will make sure Manileños realize and appreciate the importance of maritime security in our city,” she added.
Beyond policy and coordination, Atienza used the platform to push for greater representation of women in leadership and uniformed service roles, challenging lingering stereotypes.
“Marami ang nagsasabi na kapag babae ka, limitado lamang ang maaari mong magawa,” she said. “Through this position, I want to serve as an inspiration to Manileñas, and to all Filipinas (It is important for Mayor Isko and me to protect the piers here in Manila, because this is where our commerce begins). "
With her appointment, Manila is expected to deepen its partnership with the Coast Guard, focusing on safer shorelines, resilient coastal communities, and sustained growth in maritime commerce.
