Not long ago in UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament, libero Detdet Pepito was filled with emotions after University of Santo Tomas fell short to eventual bridesmaid De La Salle University in the semifinals.
There were tears of course, but she refused to surrender.
Pepito was one of the catalysts that sparked the Golden Tigresses' 16-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 win over the FEU Lady Tamaraws Saturday, April 25.
Being a vocal leader of the team, she just wanted the España-based squad to get over the hump and give themselves a fighting chance in the stepladder semifinals.
Fortunately, her teammates responded well.
“Sa teammates ko, talagang iniyakan ko ‘yan. Kagabi pa lang, so nagmamakaawa na ako. Sabi ko ayoko pang mag-pro, so please habaan pa natin ang buhay natin dito,” said Pepito.
“Actually, kagabi po, after ‘yong viewing namin, ayon, naging emotional na ako. So, in-urge ko ‘yong team, nag-group hug kami, parang nakikita ko sa mga mata nila na gusto nila talagang tumulong,” the two-time Best Libero continued.
Pepito anchored the defense with 18 excellent digs and 15 receptions. As expected, Angge Poyos, Reg Jurado, and Cassie Carballo delivered in their respective roles, with Xyza Gula and Avril Bron also stepped up big against a gritty FEU side.
“Gusto nila ‘yong goal namin. I mean, as a team. So, ayon, nakita naman natin kanina na parang kahit papano, kahit sinong i-pasok, talagang nagii-step up and nakaka-contribute. So, thank you sa kanila,” Pepito stressed.
"Actually, nung unang set po, naloka ako kasi parang yun nga, hindi nga kami, parang hindi kami yung naglalaro na yun," Pepito added. "So ayon, grateful lang din sa mga coaches na talagang to the effort para magising yung isa't isa and syempre sa mga teammates ko, salamat dahil nagpagising kayo."
Those contributions paid off as the Tigresses, not only taming the Lady Tamaraws thrice this season, have advanced to the stepladder round, where they will face Shai Nitura and the Adamson Lady Falcons this Wednesday, April 29, at the same venue.
And for Pepito, it is now or never when UST seeks to strike back at Adamson after the JP Yude-mentored crew handed them straight-set losses during the elimination.
“Of course, magsisimula naman po ‘yan sa training. So, ayon, laging sinasabi ng coaches, wala nang dapat i-doubt. Wala nang dapat i-reserve. Parang kahit sa training pa lang, all out na talaga,” said Pepito.
