Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday, April 25, urged Filipino parents and guardians to take a more proactive role in preventing youth extremism in the Philippines, stressing that families are critical to national security and long-term peace.
In a statement from the Office of the Vice President (OVP), Duterte warned that young people in the Philippines remain vulnerable to recruitment by extremist groups, noting that harmful ideologies can spread rapidly, especially online.
“We also call on parents and guardians to remain vigilant in guiding and monitoring the activities of their children, ensuring they are protected from harmful influences and prevented from being drawn into violent extremist groups,” Duterte said.
Parents key to preventing radicalization
Duterte said the fight against extremism in the Philippines starts at home, with families serving as the first line of defense against youth radicalization.
She highlighted the importance of parental awareness in disrupting recruitment pathways and preventing extremist influence among Filipino youth.
She added that strong guidance, values formation, and consistent engagement help children resist manipulation, misinformation, and online radicalization.
Strong families seen as foundation of national security
Duterte emphasized that resilient families and communities play a central role in maintaining peace and stability in the Philippines.
“Strong families and communities are essential in building a secure and peaceful future for our nation,” Duterte said, linking household-level vigilance to broader peace-building and security efforts.
Duterte stressed that sustaining anti-extremism gains in the Philippines requires strong civilian participation—particularly from families—through open communication, active monitoring of children’s interests, and coordination with schools and community organizations.
Philippine Army gains support anti-extremism efforts
Duterte’s remarks came as she commended the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion for a "successful" anti-extremism operation under Lt. Col. Eric Alfonso.
She praised the troops’ courage, discipline, and commitment to protecting communities in the Philippines, saying their efforts help curb extremist threats and uphold the rule of law.
“Your courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding our communities are worthy of the highest respect,” Duterte said. “This achievement reflects not only your operational excellence but also your dedication to upholding peace, security, and the rule of law,” she added.
“Under my leadership, we recognize the sacrifices you make in service to the nation,” Duterte said. “May this accomplishment continue to inspire unity and strengthen our collective efforts toward lasting peace and development,” she added.
