A truck allegedly lost its brakes and smashed into a chicken store along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Barangay Barangka, Marikina City on Saturday, April 25, leaving two people dead, including a nine-year-old boy, and six others injured.
“Ayon sa report, isang truck ang bumangga sa isang tindahan matapos mawalan umano ng preno (According to the report, a truck crashed into a store after allegedly losing its brakes),” the Marikina Rescue 161 initially reported.
The Marikina City Police Station (Marikina CPS) said the fatalities include a nine-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man.
Meanwhile, among the six injured were a driver and the truck’s helper. Also injured were a seven-year-old boy, an 11-year-old boy, a 33-year-old man, and a 59-year-old woman.
The incident also involved other vehicles, including a Toyota Wigo, two Toyota Fortuners, and an Isuzu Rebuilt.
Based on the initial investigation of the Marikina CPS, the incident occurred at around 11 a.m. while a Toyota Wigo was traveling eastbound along A. Bonifacio Avenue and occupying the outer lane. A truck dropside, with its driver and a helper on board, suddenly came from behind and collided with the left side of the Wigo.
The truck then continued its forward motion and subsequently struck the left side of a Toyota Fortuner, which was traveling westbound along the same road.
Due to the impact, the rear right portion of the Fortuner was pushed and collided with the front left side of another Fortuner traveling in the same direction.
However, the truck continued moving forward and hit the rear right portion of an Isuzu Rebuilt.
It then proceeded further and collided with a bollard installed along the sidewalk, damaging it, and struck several victims before finally coming to a stop and smashing into a chicken store.
The victims were immediately brought to the hospital.
The incident caused traffic congestion in the area.
The truck driver is now under police custody while the investigation is ongoing.
