Authorities dismantled an alleged illegal online cockfighting operation and arrested 30 persons in a private property in Barangay Concepcion, Talisay City, Negros Occidental on Thursday, April 23.
‎‎The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that the location was allegedly being used for an illegal online cockfighting activity run by an organized group.
‎‎Equipment used for live streaming, communication devices, and various cockfighting paraphernalia were recovered.
‎‎Talisay City Mayor Rowena Lizares said that businessman Atong Ang was reported to be one of the financiers in the operation. But she did not elaborate further as investigation is with proper authorities.
‎‎Lizares said that authorities received information about the operation in a cock farm, which, at first glance, could just be seen as an ordinary breeding ground for fighting cocks, but inside there was a studio set up for online sabong.
‎‎“It’s as if you are in a different country, well in fact it is just being rented in Talisay City,” she added.
‎‎Lizares said that Barangay Concepcion is the center for breeding and selling of fighting cocks in Talisay City.
‎‎She said that at least 280 fighting cocks were recovered by authorities. These recoveries were being linked to a series of stolen fighting cocks in the city.
‎‎Lizares said that only three of the 30 arrested individuals, including a minor, were residents of Talisay City, and the rest are from Luzon.
‎‎Police said that two individuals were rescued during the intelligence-driven operation led by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the minor is under proper care and protection.
‎‎Appropriate charges are being readied against the suspects while separate complaints for alleged trafficking in persons will be filed against several identified persons, including a dismissed police officer and other individuals believed to have facilitated or supported the operation.
‎‎In a statement, PNP chief Police Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the operation reflects the organization’s firm stance against illegal gambling and similar activities that undermine law and order.
‎‎“Hindi natin hinahayaan na magpatuloy ang ganitong mga gawain. Every operation we conduct ensures that the law is enforced and accountability follows,” he said.
‎‎He added that the PNP will continue to sustain pressure against illegal networks to prevent their re-establishment and protect communities from further harm.
‎‎“Ang mensahe natin ay malinaw—walang puwang ang ilegal na operasyon. We will persist until these activities are dismantled and those responsible are brought to justice,” he added.
‎‎Follow-up operations are ongoing to identify other individuals possibly involved, as part of its sustained campaign against illegal gambling networks.
‎‎In a press briefing in Bago City, Negros Occidental on Friday, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla urged the public to reach out to the authorities for any information against Ang who is linked to the case of missing sabungeros or cockfight enthusiasts.
