Aboitiz begins upgrading Bohol airport to meet tourism surge

Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. has commenced the phased reconfiguration of Bohol-Panglao International Airport, a critical infrastructure project to expand the capacity of the country’s tenth-busiest gateway as it approaches its first year under private management.
In a statement on Friday, April 24, the infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group said it began preparatory works this month to upgrade passenger terminals and streamline operational flow.
The initiative is the first major capital expenditure at the site since Aboitiz InfraCapital took over operations and maintenance in June 2025. The company is positioning the facility as a “Green Gateway: to support the growing tourism demands of Bohol, which recently secured status as the country’s first UNESCO Global Geopark.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) issued formal approval for the reconfiguration in March 2026. This approval encompasses a revised terminal layout, updated security protocols, and the integration of new equipment sanctioned by the Office of Transportation Security.
According to CAAP Director-General Raul Del Rosario, the project is part of a broader national strategy to modernize aviation gateways through private-sector partnerships to ensure facilities remain responsive to shifting travel volumes.
“This reconfiguration marks an important step in our continuing efforts to enhance the passenger journey at Bohol-Panglao,” said Rafael M. Aboitiz, Aboitiz InfraCapital vice president and head of airports.
He noted that the project relies heavily on a coordinated framework between the provincial government and national aviation regulators.
Beyond technical and security upgrades, the renovation includes a strategic shift in the terminal’s commercial mix.
Following a meeting between Bohol Governor Enrico Aristotle Aumentado and BPIA General Manager Aldwin C. Uy, the parties agreed to allocate additional floor space for local concessionaires.
The move is designed to showcase Boholano delicacies and goods, aligning the airport’s commercial operations with the provincial government’s Strategic Governance Roadmap.
Aumentado said that the airport serves as the primary impression for investors and tourists alike, stating that the partnership with the Aboitiz Group is essential for the province’s long-term economic development.
The enhancements are being rolled out in stages to avoid disrupting daily flight schedules. While AIC has not disclosed the total investment cost in Philippine pesos for this specific phase, the company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the airport’s status as a premier destination for both tourism and investment. The progress of the terminal redesign comes as the facility prepares for its one-year anniversary under AIC leadership this June.
