5 detainees killed in police car crash; QC gov't assures aid

Five Persons Under Police Custody (PUPC) died while several others were injured after a Philippine National Police (PNP) mobile vehicle transporting them to the Quezon City Jail crashed into a concrete wall in Barangay Payatas, Quezon City on Friday morning, April 24, 2026.
In a statement, the Quezon City government said the victims were aboard a PNP mobile vehicle en route to the city jail when the accident occurred along Payatas Road at past 11 a.m.
The crash resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries among PUPC and escorting police officers.
“Nakikiramay ang Pamahalaang Lungsod Quezon sa mga pamilya ng mga nasawi sa road accident sa Barangay Payatas (The Quezon City government extends its condolences to the families of those who died in the road accident in Barangay Payatas),” the statement read.
Emergency and health personnel were immediately deployed to the scene to assist the victims and bring them to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities said four police officers who served as escorts sustained injuries, while one detainee remains in critical condition.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, including reports of possible mechanical failure, which have yet to be confirmed.
The local government assured full assistance to the affected families, including medical support, as well as funeral and burial expenses for the deceased.
Psychosocial counseling will also be provided, while coordination with the PNP-NCRPO continues to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
