Obando residents seek aid amid Navotas Landfill smoke crisis
OBANDO, BULACAN — Hundreds of residents affected by the persistent smoke from the burning Navotas Sanitary Landfill flocked to the Damayan sa Barangay free medical mission held Wednesday, April 22, at San Pascual Elementary School.
The initiative, spearheaded by Damayan Filipino Movement Inc. under the leadership of Athenie Fernando Ramirez Bautista, offered a wide range of free services including medical and dental consultations, medicines, laboratory tests such as ECG and X-ray, and distribution of assistive devices like wheelchairs, canes, and nebulizers.
Residents also benefited from blood pressure and glucose monitoring, seedling distribution, pet vaccinations, free haircuts, and massages.
The program forms part of the flagship health project of the provincial government of Bulacan, led by Governor Daniel R. Fernando and Vice Governor Alex C. Castro.
By 9:00 a.m., residents from various barangays in Obando had gathered, many of them elderly and suffering from respiratory ailments linked to the landfill smoke.
In addition to consultations and medicines, organizers distributed reading glasses and other forms of assistance.
Bautista also encouraged residents to practice suob (steam inhalation), a traditional remedy believed to ease respiratory discomfort, while cautioning against exposure to electric fans immediately afterward to prevent phlegm buildup.
