Duterte critics in House highlight 'double whammy' day

Wednesday was a bad day to be a Duterte.
This was highlighted by the Makabayan bloc congressmen, as well as Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima, in separate statements on Aprill 22.
That day, former president Rodrigo Duterte's challenge to the International Criminal Court's (ICC) jurisdiction over his crimes against humanity case was junked; meanwhile, over at the House of Representatives in the Philippines, solons continued to build a case to impeach his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, for the second time in as many years.
"Dutertes suffer double whammy today," Makabayan members ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago, and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co said in a joint statement Wednesday.
"Digong’s appeal on jurisdiction was rejected by the ICC. Sara’s questionable bank transactions in the billions have been exposed," they said.
"Accountability is coming for them. The people should press on with this demand," added the militant trio.
De Lima, the House senior deputy minority leader, gave a similar assessment of Wednesday's events.
"Slowly but surely, impunity is becoming a thing of the past," De Lima, a former senator, said on X.
"Sabay ang paggulong ng impeachment ni VP Sara at ang paglilitis ng ICC kay Duterte (The impeachment of VP Sara and the ICC trial of Duterte are moving forward simultaneously). Justice and accountability are on track both at the House and the ICC," she said.
"Sa pamamagitan ng AMLC (Anti-Money Laundering Council) report, lalong tumibay ang basehan ng impeachment ni VP Sara at paglatag ng malakas na ebidensiya sa Senado," said De Lima, an endorser of one of the two active impeachment complaints against the Vice President.
(Through the AMLC report, the basis for VP Sara’s impeachment has been further strengthened, laying down strong evidence in the Senate.)
"Sa pagbasura naman ng apela ni Duterte sa issue ng jurisdiction sa ICC, wala na ring balakid sa nalalapit na desisyon ng ICC pre-trial chamber sa confirmation of charges laban sa dating pangulo," De Lima added.
(Meanwhile, with the dismissal of Duterte’s appeal on the issue of jurisdiction at the ICC, there is no longer any obstacle to the forthcoming decision of the ICC pre-trial chamber on the confirmation of charges against the former president.)
The elder Duterte's ICC charge is linked to the bloody war on drugs carried out by law enforcement authorities during his tenure in Malacañang from 2016 to 2022.
During Wednesday's House Committee on Justice hearing, the AMLC told congressmen that it flagged nearly P6.8 billion worth of transactions from bank accounts linked to Vice President Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio from 2006 to 2025.
