SANYA, China — Jiu-jitsu bets Annie Ramirez and Yman Xavier Baluyo brimmed with pride and honor as they held the flag for the Philippine delegation in the Parade of Athletes during the dazzling opening ceremony of the 6th Asian Beach Games on Wednesday, April 22 here.
While jiu-jitsu is seen as one of the stronger fronts for the Philippine team in the beach games — having three of its overall five golds coming from the sport — their selection actually still came as a surprise for the two grapplers.
“Sinabi nalang po sa amin, kami po yung magiging flag bearers. So sobrang shock po, sobrang honored pa rin ako. Sobrang excited ako para mapakita ko yung bansa ko dito sa Asian Beach Games,” said the 19-year-old Baluyo.
“Sobrang honored din. Happy ako na isa ako sa mga flag bearers. Like Yman said masaya ako,” echoed Ramirez. “Siyempre isang honor and privilege na kami yung magdadala ng flag for the delegation.”
A two-time Asian Beach Games gold medalist, Ramirez is gunning for a hat-trick in this edition at this beautiful southernmost city of China when she competes in the women’s 57 kg — a weight class slightly heavier than her 55kg division in the last edition.
Sharing the flag-bearing duties with Ramirez, Baluyo who is still coming into his own in the sport after bagging a silver in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand last December, was naturally elated to be able to lead the PH contingent.
"Kaya mayroon, sigurado po, si coach Annie, ang dami na pong experience. Really honored lang kasama ko po siya talaga eh, sa lahat ng kasama sobrang honored lang talaga ako,” said Baluyo.
Baluyo is competing in the men’s 69kg – the same class where he won a medal for the country in the SEAG.
