Jollibee Foods Corp. has achieved a first for the Philippine quick-service restaurant industry, securing a green building certification for its Tuguegarao City branch as the fast-food giant accelerates its push toward operational sustainability.
In a statement, Jollibee said its Enrile branch in Tuguegarao is the first in the country’s restaurant sector to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for Operations and Maintenance (O+M) from the United States (US) Green Building Council.
Unlike standard design certifications, the O+M designation evaluates the daily performance of existing structures, focusing on measurable outputs in energy conservation, water management, and indoor air quality.
The move comes as Philippine corporations face a dual challenge of some of the highest electricity rates in Southeast Asia and increasing pressure from investors to formalize environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets.
By securing the LEED O+M credential, Jollibee said it is shifting from passive architectural design to active resource management across its massive store network.
“Sustainability is not treated as a separate program,” Fernando Yu Jr., Jollibee Philippines president, said. “It is built into how we design, build, and operate every store so we can continue bringing joy to Filipino families while caring for the future.”
The Tuguegarao facility, which opened in November 2024, serves as the pilot for the company’s “Joy for Tomorrow” sustainability agenda. The store is equipped with rooftop solar panels capable of slashing traditional grid-based electricity consumption by as much as 30 percent.
To further mitigate power costs, the branch utilizes solar window films to deflect heat and reduce the load on air conditioning systems, alongside high-efficiency motors and LED lighting arrays.
Water scarcity and waste management—chronic issues for urban centers in the country—are also addressed through the facility’s infrastructure. The store features a rainwater harvesting system and an on-site wastewater treatment plant, allowing the branch to recycle water for maintenance and cleaning.
These upgrades are intended to provide a blueprint for a wider rollout as the company seeks to shield its margins from volatile utility costs.
The Jollibee Group, which has been aggressively expanding its global footprint, is increasingly viewing these efficiencies as a driver for long-term growth. The company indicated that the technologies validated at the Enrile branch will be integrated into more of its stores nationwide, aiming to standardize high-performance operations across its local portfolio.
As the dominant player in the local domestic market, Jollibee’s pivot toward certified green operations sets a high bar for competitors.
The company is betting that the upfront capital expenditure required for solar and water-treatment systems will be offset by multi-year savings in operational expenses, particularly as the Philippines continues to grapple with energy security and rising utility tariffs.
