Senator Sherwin Gatchalian urged the Philippine National Academy (PNPA) on Wednesday, April 22 to review its existing policies to prevent hazing activities from being committed within the institution.
Gatchalian made the call following the filing of a criminal case against seven cadets of the PNPA over the alleged maltreatment of 22 other cadets.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) filed the complaint for violation of Republic Act No. 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 against seven respondents which include third class cadets and second class cadets.
The criminal charges have been lodged before the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor in Imus, Cavite.
“The filing of cases against seven Philippine National Academy (PNPA) cadets for alleged violations of the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 (Republic Act No. 11053) is a crucial step towards justice and accountability,” Gatchalian said.
“Hindi na natin dapat kinukunsinti o binibigyang puwang ang ganitong uri ng pang-aabuso at karahasan, lalo na kung ito’y nagaganap sa institusyong inaasahang maghubog ng disiplina, integridad, at paggalang sa batas (We should no longer tolerate or allow this type of abuse and violence, especially when it occurs in an institution that is expected to foster discipline, integrity, and respect for the law),” he said.
“Moving forward, the PNPA should thoroughly review its policies to stricly enforce anti-hazing measures, and to root out the culture of violence that allows these ghastly practices to persist,” he stressed.
