Six passengers were rescued after their motorbanca capsized in the waters off San Jose, Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday, April 22, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The PCG said it received a report about the incident at around 11 a.m. and immediately sent a floating asset to conduct search and rescue (SAR) operations in the vicinity waters of Barangay Pag-asa.
The SAR team reached the site after 20 minutes and immediately located the capsized motorbanca, leading to the rescue of the distressed passengers, the PCG said.
“All survivors were accounted for and were initially assessed to be in good physical condition,” PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Cayabyab said.
The PCG reminded small vessel operators to adhere to safety compliance due to frequent exposure to shifting sea conditions.
Efforts were now focused on recovering the vessel, Cayabayab shared.
“Towing operations are currently underway to bring the capsized motorbanca to the nearest shoreline,” she said.
As of press time, the PCG SAR team remained on site to monitor the situation and determine what caused the boat to overturn.
