PLDT threaded through the eye of the needle to slip past a determined Farm Fresh side, 22-25, 25-21, 27-25, 26-28, 15-11, and move within striking distance of the bronze medal in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday, April 21.
The High Speed Hitters dug deep after dropping a tight fourth-set battle, unleashing their composure in the decider as they flipped a 5-7 deficit into a gritty match-clinching win.
The victory inched them a win away from a podium finish in their best-of-three affair.
Savi Davison powered PLDT with a 33-point explosion, taking charge in the clutch with a stellar all-around showing. She delivered back-to-back blocks on Trisha Tubu and hammered down a down-the-line spike to break a 10-all deadlock and spark a 13-10 surge.
Kiana Dy fired a quick kill to bring up match point at 14-10, but PLDT misfired on the next play as Jovielyn Prado’s serve sailed long.
Davison quickly restored order, though, blasting a crosscourt winner to slam the door on Farm Fresh.
PLDT coach Rald Ricafort said the match has never been easy, as with their previous games.
“Sobrang hirap from the previous games. Credit pa rin sa Farm Fresh. Happy pa rin at nailaban namin,” he said.
Davison, who highlighted her performance with 30 kills, echoed the sentiment.
“I think we’ve had a pretty tough journey leading to the playoffs so we came into this game really wanting to redeem ourselves,” she said.
“Everyone’s just playing their roles and backing each other up, just so to keep our goal of finishing it off the right way,” she added.
Dy and Mika Reyes flashed their vintage form and also paced the High Speed Hitters with 16 and 10 points, respectively, while Alleiah Malaluan and Majoy Baron chipped in 11 and 10 points.
While firing on all cylinders offensively, PLDT also leaned on a sturdy net defense anchored by Baron and Dy, who combined for seven of the team’s 13 blocks.
Their presence at the net helped blunt the impact of Trisha Tubu, who still poured in 30 points for Farm Fresh but couldn’t carry her side over the hump.
