Minor phreatic eruption recorded at Taal Volcano on April 21
Screenshot from time-lapse footage shows a brief minor phreatic eruption at Taal Volcano’s Main Crater between 7:10 p.m. and 7:11 p.m. on April 21, producing a 100-meter plume as captured by thermal cameras at the Daang Kastila Observation Station and Main Crater Observation Station. A very weak, minor phreatic or steam-driven eruption occurred at Taal Volcano on Tuesday evening, April 21, producing a plume that rose about 100 meters above the Main Crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
Time-lapse footage captured the brief event between 7:10 p.m. and 7:11 p.m. at the volcano’s Main Crater.
The activity was recorded by thermal cameras installed at the Daang Kastila Observation Station and the Main Crater Observation Station in Batangas.
Phivolcs said the eruption is consistent with ongoing low-level unrest at the volcano.
Alert Level 1 remains in effect, indicating abnormal conditions but no magmatic eruption.
The agency reiterated that entry into Taal Volcano Island, particularly the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, remains strictly prohibited due to hazards such as sudden steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and volcanic gas emissions.
