Police forces were deployed in Negros Occidental to assist in securing communities affected by the fierce clashes between government troops and communist rebels in Taboso town.
At least 19 communist rebels died in the clash and Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said his instruction to unit commanders is to coordinate with the military to ensure the safety and welfare of the civilians.
Nartatez said police units in Negros Occidental were placed on heightened alert as part of the security measures amid the ongoing follow-up operations.
“Our top priority is to ensure the safety of our communities while operations continue in Negros Occidental. We are coordinating with the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) and local government units to immediately restore normalcy in the affected areas,” Nartatez said.
Authorities reported that around 366 residents were displaced due to the clashes that began on April 18. Evacuation and assistance efforts are ongoing to support affected families while security operations continue.
He said local police were directed to support military units in securing affected areas and keeping a close watch on suspicious individuals.
The clash occurred in Barangay Salamanca on April 19 between government troops and members of the Northern Negros Front, Komiteng Rehiyon–Negros (NNF, KR-N).
Nartatez emphasized that police presence will remain strong in affected communities while coordinating with the military to ensure stability and prevent further escalation of violence in the area.
Officials identified the armed group as being led by Roger Fabillar, also known as Arnel Tapang and Jhong, who is reportedly wanted for multiple killings. Security forces are conducting follow-up operations to clear remaining threats in the area.
Nartatez assured the public that the PNP will maintain order and prevent further intimidation in local communities.
