Thai culture is showcased in Makati to celebrate Songkran.
The Royal Thai Embassy brought a slice of Thailand to Manila over the weekend, hosting the second Thai Festival at Legazpi Active Park on April 18–19, coinciding with the country’s Songkran celebrations.
The two-day event transformed the park into a showcase of Thai culture, featuring traditional dance and cultural performances alongside a wide selection of food and beverage stalls presenting familiar Thai flavors to a local audience.
Thai Ambassador Makawadee Sumitmor led the opening, joined by Makati Mayor Nancy Binay in welcoming visitors to the event. Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Theresa Dizon-De Vega was also present, along with members of the diplomatic corps.
Makati Mayor Nancy Binay and Thai Ambassador Makawadee Sumitmor officially open the event.
In her remarks, Ambassador Sumitmor noted that this year’s edition builds on the success of its inaugural run, with the timing aligned to Songkran, Thailand’s traditional New Year celebration. “It is Thailand's most vibrant celebration and holds significant meaning in Thai society and culture. It include a playful water festival and is a time for family bonding, expressing gratitude to who we admire and look up to, especially the elders,” Sumitmor said.
Beyond the performances, the festival drew steady crowds to its food and retail booths, where Thai restaurants and vendors in the Philippines highlighted dishes and products that have grown increasingly popular among Filipino consumers.
Set in the heart of Makati, the festival offered a more accessible way for the public to engage with Thai culture—bringing together elements of tradition, cuisine, and community in a format that continues to gain traction in the city’s cultural calendar.
