Efforts to contain the fire at the old Navotas Sanitary Landfill are still ongoing, with authorities continuing soil cover and smoke-control operations as of Sunday evening, April 19. In their latest update, local officials said soil is being placed over hotspots beneath the piles of trash to smother the flames.
Water misting are also being done to lessen smoke emissions and improve air quality in affected areas.
To speed up response efforts, authorities have opened an additional access road leading to the operation site, allowing faster entry of equipment and personnel involved in extinguishing the blaze.
As of 6 p.m., the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Navotas was recorded at 138, which falls under the “orange” category.
Residents are still being urged to wear face masks and limit outdoor activities as much as possible.
Local officials also expressed gratitude to government agencies, partner organizations, and private companies assisting in the large-scale operation.
Authorities assured the public that continuous updates will be provided as efforts to fully extinguish the fire continue.
