No tsunami threat has been recorded in the Philippines following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on Monday afternoon, April 20, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the earthquake occurred at 3:52 p.m. (Philippine time).
In an advisory, the agency noted that while hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coastal areas within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter, the Philippines is not among those at risk.
Phivolcs defines a tsunami as a series of sea waves commonly generated by undersea earthquakes and can reach heights of more than five meters.
It added that tsunamis are often erroneously referred to as tidal waves and are sometimes confused with storm surges.
The advisory was issued for information purposes only, and no action is required from the public, Phivolcs said.
