- Family, friends, and fans honor Nora Aunor on her first death anniversary, as her children hold separate tributes amid reports of a family rift.
It was both a solemn and heartfelt day as family, friends, and fans commemorated the first death anniversary of National Artist Nora Aunor on April 16. While prayers and tributes filled the occasion, a deep sense of loss lingered among those present, many expressing how much they miss the Superstar.
At the Libingan ng mga Bayani, eldest son Ian de Leon led a morning Mass at his mother’s gravesite. He was joined by his immediate family, veteran actress Boots Anson-Roa Rodrigo, close friends, and longtime fans, some of whom traveled from different provinces and even overseas.
Flowers were offered, candles lit, and prayers said at the resting place of the woman affectionately called “Ate Guy.”
In a separate observance, daughter Lotlot de Leon held a Mass with her family at St. John Paul II Parish. Photos shared online showed siblings Matet de Leon and Kenneth de Leon in attendance, along with award-winning actress Maricel Soriano.
By afternoon, some of Nora’s children proceeded to the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Kenneth and Matet visited the grave alongside second son Kiko Villamayor. Also seen paying respects was Nora’s longtime companion John Rendez, who quietly offered flowers.
Observers noted that although they were in the same place later in the day, Matet and Ian stayed with their respective families and did not interact. Earlier, Ian shared that he had invited his siblings to the morning rites and expressed hope for healing within the family.
“In God’s good graces and in His time, everything will fall into place. It’s just a matter of time. And probably sooner or later, everything will be patched up,” he said.
Reflecting on his mother’s passing, Ian added, “I had to condition my mindset that she is now in the hands of our Father. We just have to be thankful that life has its course,” noting their effort to honor Nora’s wish to remain joyful despite her passing.
Those close to Nora also shared memories of her final days. Best friend Susan Bundoc recalled, “During her last four days, she was very happy… That’s why what happened was so surprising because she was so cheerful.”
For Edgar Castro, the loss remains deeply felt. “When she took her last breath, we were there… It’s still hard to move on,” he said.
Fans continued to arrive at the gravesite throughout the day, many visibly emotional. Ian described the atmosphere simply: “You can feel the love from everyone.”
Later that evening, a tribute event titled “Bongga Ka, Guy!” was held at the Philippine Navy Golf Club, where Lotlot made a brief but emotional appearance.
In her message, she thanked fans for their unwavering support and emphasized that her mother’s legacy goes beyond awards.
“Ang legasiya po ni Mommy… ay tungkol sa kanya bilang butihing tao, sa kanyang pagtulong sa kapwa niya, sa kanyang pagmamahal sa kapwa niya. Yun po ang pinaka-importante para sa akin,” she said.
