BACOLOD CITY – The Land Transportation Office-Negros Island Region (LTO-NIR) is investigating another alleged “gas-and-run” incident in a gasoline station in Barangay Taculing here on Wednesday, April 15.
LTO-NIR Director Jeck Conlu said they have identified the owner of the vehicle – a Nissan Terra – and license plates through a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage of the incident.
However, the identity of the driver who reportedly fled without paying gasoline worth P6,000 remains unknown.
On Friday, April 17, the agency’s Intelligence and Investigation Unit issued a show-cause order against the registered owner of the vehicle.
Conlu said the driver’s license could be suspended for up to three months while investigation is ongoing. The owner has been given five days to submit a verified explanation.
On Feb. 27, a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) also fled a gasoline station in Barangay Mansilingan here without paying P500. A show cause order was issued to the SUV owner. Authorities have yet to determine who was driving the vehicle.
The LTO-NIR warned that such actions, if proven, could be considered misconduct and violations of Republic Act No. 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, and may also lead to criminal charges.
The agency encouraged the people to report similar incidents as part of their efforts to promote accountability and road discipline.
Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Negros Island Region (DSWD-NIR) has distributed P77.035 million in fuel assistance to 15,417 tricycle drivers in 43 municipalities or 92.39 percent of its 16,687 target beneficiaries as of Thursday, April 16.
Each driver received P5,000 under the agency’s Cash Relief Assistance (CRA) program, which aims to support vulnerable sectors affected by rising economic pressures.
The DSWD said they are continuing efforts to reach the remaining beneficiaries, with ongoing monitoring and coordination to complete the distribution as soon as possible.
The agency released P169.85 million in cash aid to 33,970 tricycle drivers in 19 cities in a three-day payout last week, achieving a 97.13 percent completion rate.
Meanwhile, 1,780 jeepney drivers in this highly-urbanized city received P1,000 fuel subsidy each from Bacolod Rep. Albee Benitez.
Benitez launched fuel cards to help transport workers cope with rising fuel prices and is part of ongoing efforts to provide immediate and practical support to essential sectors.
