Citing the current oil woes in the country, which directly affect public utility vehicles (PUVs), Malacañang said there is no discussion about the immediate implementation of the program that aims to modernize jeepneys.
In a press briefing in Iloilo City on Friday, April 17, Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the program's implementation is not being discussed for now.
She, however, emphasized the need for modernization which is crucial to providing safe and convenient travel to commuters.
We all know the reason why we need modernization for our jeepneys. This is to provide a proper, strong, and safe mode of transport for our commuters, and it will also be a great convenience for all of us)," Castro said.
But at this time, given what we are experiencing, the crisis in the Middle East, the immediate implementation of this is not being discussed; for now, there is none)," Castro stressed.
She said this when sought for a comment on those advocating for the discontinuation of the modernization of public transport, including the phaseout of jeepneys.
Meanwhile, the Palace official said President Marcos has ordered the implementation of fuel subsidy and service contracting nationwide. The initiatives were initially implemented in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The government has a program on fuel subsidy and service contracting. Although this was initially started in Metro Manila, the President has ordered that it be implemented nationwide)," Castro said.
"At makakaasa ang mga drivers natin dito sa Iloilo City na ang tulong pong ito ay makakarating po dito sa ating area ngayon (Drivers here in Iloilo City can expect that this assistance will also reach our area now)," she added.
