Eighteen young math aces from various public and private schools across the country have qualified as members of the Philippine Mathematics Team set to compete in math contests abroad.
The students have just completed a four-day Young Mathematicians In-House Training Program at Great Eastern Hotel in Quezon City.
Mathematics Training Guild Phils. (MTG), which has been mentoring math prodigies nationwide since the mid-1990s, conducted the training program.
MTG head Dr. Simon Chua named the new team members as Seth Nigel Ofilada of Calamba Elementary School; Thea Pauleen Garcia of Colegio San Agustin Laguna; Harold Theodore Lorenzo of Xavier School San Juan; Wilzent Brian Lim and Heal Job Esio of Pangasinan Universal Institute; Jared Connor Mari of UNO High School; Garuen Eirich Maddatu of Taguig Science High School; Jacob Trevor Kaw of Better Together Homeschool International; Prince Jomarie Araneta of Philippine Academy of Sakya Manila; Cyrus Carl Manarang and Hanna Brielle Go of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Alistair Ivan Siahingco and Erin Leighton Go of St. Jude Catholic School; Miguel Yee of St. John's Institute; Jenelle Nyka Lee of Chiang Kai Shek College; Robert Henrik Uy of St. John's Institute; Jaden Nathan Hernandez of St. Stephen's High School, and Joni Shane Ting of Grace Christian College.
"Being the cream of the crop in their grade levels, these math wonder kids have earned the spot in the elite circle of mathematicians," said Chua.
Batch 1 of the YMIITP was held from April 5 to 8, followed by Batch 2 on April 10 to 14.
The new team members are set to undergo a month-long Math Olympiad Summer Training Program at Hope Christian High school scheduled for April 20 to May 16.
Earlier, they were among thousands of math-gifted students nationwide who completed MTG's "12 Saturdays" math workshops in the NGO's 60-plus training centers.
Both training programs aim to prepare and expose the math aces to international math contests through correspondence strategies, as well as develop their higher order thinking to be globally competitive as they also foster national and international brotherhood.
Some of the math contests lined up for Philippine Math Team members include Po Leung Kuk and World Math Olympiad, both in Hong Kong; India International Math Competition; Asian Math Olympiad in South Korea; Australian Math Competition; International Kangaroo Math Contest; International Math & Science Olympiad in China and Global Peak Challenge in Macau, among others.
