Sleeping on a bed while in the air was once a dream limited solely to business-class flyers, but one airline is making it more accessible to economy flyers.
Air New Zealand recently unveiled the Economy Skynest sleeping pods made for their new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flights. Customers can soon avail of this feature starting May 18 for select flights from November onwards. These pods are six individual spaces, constructed in a similar manner to bunk beds. They consist of a mattress with bedding, a privacy curtain, a seatbelt, reading lights, charging ports, and an amenity kit. Fresh pillows and a blanket are also provided. Each nest is around 203cm (6.6 feet/80 inches) in length, and the width at the shoulder is around 64cm (25 inches), tapering to around 41cm (16 inches) at the feet.
There are six nests available for six nesters at a time. Renting out the nest allows the passenger up to four hours of use. Four hours was the chosen timeframe as it was found to be an optimal amount of time for a regular sleep cycle. These nest zones are also a quiet space, as their sole purpose is for sleeping. Earbuds are included in the amenity kit. Sheets and pillows are changed after each session. Complimentary socks are also included in the amenity kit so that users can enjoy a seamless and comfortable experience.

Aside from the upcoming Economy Skynest feature, Air New Zealand also offers an Economy Skycouch feature, wherein the footrests lift up, and three seats turn into a flat surface for passengers to stretch out. Other airlines have also started coming up with unique ways to provide comfortable experiences within the economy bracket. Just last March, United Airlines announced the United Relax Row. This feature allows passengers to transform United Economy seats into a full couch. It is expected to launch in 2027 and be available in over 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft by 2030.
Air New Zealand's Economy Skynest will soon be available in what is considered one of the world's longest flight routes, a 17-hour flight between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Auckland, New Zealand. It is priced at ₱29, 688.12 ($495) per session.
